A Hairy Dilemma

haircut

Since we've moved back to Texas I have not been able to find someone I like to do my hair.  Since it's hot and humid and I wear it in a pony tail most days this is not a problem.  However, some days a girl just wants to look pretty. I found the above on pinterest and thought it might work on my hair.

I printed it out and took it with me to show the lady.  I just picked a random salon, but was hopeful when my stylist had long thin hair.  I figured, maybe she would be my kindred hair spirit.
She was charming and pleasant, and I won't have to wear a paper bag on my head (and it's better than what I started with), but not what I asked for:

Not even close

I am a big chicken and when she asked if I liked it, I just smiled, and paid her-even tipped her.  I was afraid to either hurt her feelings or end up with something that I would actually need a paper bag to cover up?

Survey time: What do you do when you get a bad haircut?

  1. Aw I hate that! It actually is an adorable cut, but you're right- it is not the picture cut at all. I am a chicken. I smile, tip, and go home and cry. Then I wait way too long before I brave the salon again and I end up looking like a character out of 'Little House on The Prairie' who hasn't had access to scissors this decade (That's my current awesome style). Hope that makes you feel a little better :)

  2. You must be my kindred hair spirit. I too go way too long between cuts and I am totally stealing your "Little House on The Prairie" to describe this look:)

  3. You are gorgeous anyway Tara, but you are right, she didn't do the cut you asked for.
...I too am a chicken, I do the same thing, smile, pay and get out of there as fast as I can...then I come home and cry and complain about it!
...I love the Little House on the Prairie description, ha ha!

  4. It doesn't look bad, but I do feel your pain! Just last week I had a similar experience--only I came home with mahogany hair! (the color that was so popular with German women when I lived there) Definitely not what I wanted. I paid, tipped and left. I have been vigorously washing and I figure that I am going to have to simply wait it out!

    1. I currently have what's left of some Mahogany streaks. I feel like I am channeling Sharon Osborne. My hair is so much darker than yours, so even though it wasn't what I wanted it blends in a little more. Happy hair washing!

  5. It looks cute! However, it is very obvious it is not the cut you asked for...better luck next time! I will say that when I have not been happy with the end result, I did NOT leave a tip.

  6. I don't think it looks bad at all, but you are right -- nothing like the photo! So sorry. :( If you lived in WI, I'd recommend my sister -- she's an awesome hairdresser! Hope you find someone you like. (PS. and I would have still tipped and paid, too. I'm not brave enough to do anything else! lol)

    1. A good hair dresser is gold-even better if it's your sister.

  7. I think your hair is cute, too, but not what you wanted. My sis-in-law is an amazing hair stylist, and she's been doing my whole family's hair for years. I hear all the dirt sitting in that chair, so here's a tip:
    - At this point, you've paid her and walked away. You could do one of two things. 1 - Go back to her, nicely explain that while you appreciate her previous effort, you were really hoping for a cut more like the picture. Maybe she'll do it for free or discounted. OR 2 - Find a different stylist altogether. BEFORE she cuts, ask her IF your hair will even hold that style. If they say it will, go for it.

My sis-in-law says people bring pics to her all the time and want thier hair a certain way, but they may not have the texture hair to support it. So keep that in mind, too.

    But, you're super cute anyway :) {Sorry for the novel!}

    1. Good tips. I think it's a really good point to ask if you hair type will even work in a particular style. I'd actually had my hair like this before, so I don't think that was the problem this time. I surely going for #2 b/c as I said before I am a chicken, but judging by the comments I am not alone in my cowardice.

  8. Tara,

I just found your blog, and I'm a walking hair disaster. I have super thick hair with just enough curl to make my life miserable. I either look like I'm trying to bring back the "Aunt Bea" bouffant if I have short hair, or I have long hair and part of my head is pouffy and the other is flat. And I won't go on about the directions of the curls.

My advice to you is to specifically pay attention to hair when you are out in public. I noticed a lady at a makeup counter once and asked her where she goes, and I went to the same salon she did after that and was very happy. I swear I needed a cigarette after the shampoo I had there, and I don't smoke.

Anyway, I'm too afraid of confrontation with the person that holds the scissors, I would have done exactly what you did. Only I wouldn't go back to her again.

    1. I think it's funny how we all have issues w/ our hair. I do think it is important to find a style that works best with your hair. I am now on a mission to start stalking people w/ good hair and find out where they go. I am either going to end up w/ a good hair style or a restraining order:)

    2. When I lived in Texas, it took me a long time to find a great hairdresser. I wear my hair short and am very picky. But now that I am back in Utah I find that Supercuts does just as well for my short hair as the 50 or 60 dollar cuts at a fancy salon!

    3. I agree that the more you pay does not insure a better cut. The above was Fantastic Sams, but I've tried a few fancier salons and have been equally disappointed, but for twice as much money:)

  9. It's not the cut you asked for, but it looks great on you, Tara! I'm a chicken too... I smile, say it looks good, pay and leave. Thankfully we don't tip over here, so I don't have to worry about that as well. I then don't try and find a new place for ages and I just let my hair get really long and GASP...I trim the fringe and my husband trims the bottom. Thankfully, I've now found a GREAT hairdresser who listens to me and then discusses whether the look I want will work with my hair. I've been happy with every cut she's done!

    1. Lucky you! It is just so hard to find someone that will actually listen.

  10. I say something about what I don't like. I'm a stylist myself and I ask a lot of open ended questions to my clients. My personal hair stylist doesn't know I do hair also and I like it like that. As long as you're polite about what you'd like fixed she should fix it without attitude. Oh I'm a beauty school instructor too.

    1. I think that in addition to being chicken of hurting her feelings, most of the time I don't really know exactly what's wrong w/ the cut and so don't have a specific suggestion of what I want her to fix. In this case, since the picture was sitting there the entire time and it obviously isn't what I got, I had no confidence in my stylist and was concerned that it would get worse. Another problem, is that they always ask "is that what you want?" when it's still wet and I can't tell. I always feel like it's too late after it's already styled.

  11. i have gotten a little better
about telling the stylist how i feel

    there are even times
i have called to go back the following day
    and have it fixed

    but i am lucky
    because i love
    my current stylist

    your hair looks lovely
    but you're right

    not what you asked for!

    thanks for sharing

  12. I forget where in Texas you are....anywhere close to North Dallas? I know a GREAT stylist! She'll do it like you want, or will be 1000% honest about why that may not be the best choice and offer an even better alternative...that didn't apply to yours, but she's done to me when needed! :) Email me and I'll give you her FB and phone contact, if interested!! redgatorfa@hotmail.com

    1. I am in San Antonio, but it would almost be worth the drive to get a decent haircut:)

  13. I am a chicken too...a few months ago, I actually said something after the cut. Her response was that she was so sorry and now that she looked closer she could see where she messed-up. She assured me it would be better the next time! What next time??!!?? I left and then nearly cried at home. My son thought I was crazy. I got over it and it grew. I chose a totally different person for my last cut, we discussed in detail ahead of time what I wanted, what her plan was, etc. I love it and have been getting tons of compliments! (BTW, I am also a Fantastic Sam's customer in San Antonio!)

Which Fantastic Sam's do you go to and who do you use? (I was at the Bandera/ 1604 one).

  14. LOL, I took the same picture in and kept saying do not cut the sides short,I take 3 of my 7 grandkiddos to waterparks and watch the 2 to 3 days aweek. So I thought yes I have wavy/curly in back so i knew I would have to drag out the flat iron, but that would be ok. He cut about 4 inches off sides and gave me BANGS, I like you made nice talk, oh and he curled it with an iron, so I looked like Jacqulyn Smith (her hair is great for her)it has still been hot here in Cali. two cold days now up to 80s tomorrow, what part of the picture did they not uderstand or maybe we hit on a day they wanted to use thier creativity, they really should know how to do it, this cut is a modified jennifer aniston,so when I do my hair its nice for about 6 hours so I am back to braiding or pony with a poof. One thing hair does grow and I am now going to stalk women while Christmas shopping and when I see the correct cut I am proudly walking up and telling her that her hair cut is awesome where does she get it done ,,,,,just praying for not a 100.00 referal.
